Education

  • MBBS from a recognized medical college/university with valid registration from the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC).
  • Postgraduate qualification in Clinical Pathology and/or Clinical Biochemistry, such as: MD / M.Phil (Pathology) and FCPS / MD /M.Phil (Biochemistry) (with minimum 8 years’ experience after post-graduate degree in a clinical diagnostic laboratory, preferably within a tertiary care hospital or an ISO-accredited facility)

Additional Requirements

  • Age At most 50 years
  • Valid BMDC Registration is mandatory.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in:-

    Clinical Pathology (e.g., hematology, urine analysis, cytopathology, body fluids, etc.)

    Clinical Biochemistry (e.g., liver function tests, renal profiles, hormone assays, electrolytes, tumor markers).

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven ability to validate and authorize complex laboratory reports with high diagnostic accuracy.
  • Commitment to ongoing medical education, participation in workshops/conferences, and clinical research.
  • Experience supervising and training junior consultants, Lab Manager, laboratory technologists etc.
  • Full Time including weekends; available for emergency coverage as required by hospital operations

Responsibilities & Context

Job Summary

The Consultant (Clinical Pathology & Clinical Biochemistry) at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital plays a pivotal role in delivering accurate, reliable, and timely diagnostic laboratory services that are essential for effective patient care. The Consultant is responsible for supervising and interpreting a wide range of laboratory investigations in both clinical pathology and biochemistry, ensuring the highest standards of quality and clinical relevance. This role includes validation of test results, collaboration with clinicians for diagnostic decision-making, adherence to national and international quality standards, and oversight of laboratory personnel and operations. The Consultant also actively contributes to continuous quality improvement, staff development, and the implementation of advanced diagnostic methodologies in line with the hospital’s commitment to excellence in healthcare.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Diagnostic Services

  • Perform and interpret laboratory tests in Clinical Pathology (e.g., hematology, cytology, urinalysis, body fluid analysis) and Clinical Biochemistry (e.g., liver function tests, renal profile, electrolytes, hormones).
  • Validate and authorize laboratory reports to ensure diagnostic accuracy and clinical relevance.
  • Correlate laboratory findings with patient history and clinical data, providing expert interpretation to attending physicians.

2. Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Implement and supervise quality control protocols (both internal and external) to maintain accuracy, precision, and reliability of test results.
  • Ensure full compliance with hospital policiesDGHS/BMDC regulations, and international laboratory standards.
  • Participate actively in laboratory auditsaccreditation processes, and proficiency testing.

3. Laboratory Operations & Safety

  • Oversee the daily operation and performance of laboratory instruments and automated analyzers.
  • Monitor preventive maintenanceequipment calibration, and service schedules in coordination with biomedical and technical teams.
  • Manage reagent and consumables inventory, ensuring cost-effective procurement and usage.
  • Enforce biosafetywaste management, and infection prevention protocols in accordance with national and institutional guidelines.

4. Staff Supervision & Development

  • Supervise and support Lab Manager, Scientific Officer, laboratory technologists, technicians, and support staff in pathology and biochemistry sections.
  • Conduct training sessionscompetency assessments, and skill development programs to maintain a high-performing team.

5. Clinical Collaboration & Support

  • Liaise closely with clinical departments to provide consultative support for diagnostic decisionsmonitoring, and therapeutic planning.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetingsward rounds, and tumor boards as needed.
  • Contribute to clinical researchcase reviews, and evidence-based diagnostic initiatives.

6. Standardization & Process Improvement

  • Develop, review, and revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to reflect best practices and current scientific evidence.
  • Identify and address workflow inefficiencies to enhance turnaround timereport quality, and patient safety.
  • Recommend and help implement new testsanalyzers, or diagnostic platforms after proper evaluation and validation.

7. Administrative & Reporting Tasks

  • Maintain thorough and accurate documentation of test recordsQC logsincident reports, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Generate and submit periodic operational reports to laboratory management and hospital administration.
  • Actively participate in management meetingsbudget planning, and strategic development of the laboratory department.

8. Continuing Education & Professional Development

  • Attend and contribute to workshopsconferences, and seminars—both nationally and internationally—to remain updated in the field.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning, evidence-based practice, and professional ethics within the laboratory team.
