Responsibilities & Context
Provide strategic management for the vegetable breeding program, overseeing different aspects of vegetable crop breeding project.
Manage a team of scientists, technicians, and support staff to ensure the successful execution of breeding objectives.
Develop and implement breeding strategies tailored to the specific needs and goals of vegetable crop improvements specifically yield, disease resistance, quality, and adaptation to different environmental conditions.
Conduct genetic research to understand the genetic basis of important traits in vegetable crops.
Utilize molecular markers and genomic technologies to accelerate breeding progress and marker-assisted selection.
Oversee the entire breeding process, from germplasm evaluation and selection to hybridization, progeny testing, and variety release.
Design and conduct field trials and laboratory evaluations to assess vegetable crop varieties for desired traits.
Prioritize traits such as disease resistance, fruit quality, shelf-life, nutritional content, and tolerance to abiotic stresses.
Collaborate with internal and external partners, including other breeders, researchers, agronomists, seed companies, and farmers.
Foster collaborations to leverage expertise, resources, and germplasm for crop improvement.
Maintain comprehensive records of breeding experiments, trial results, and genetic data.
Analyze breeding data using statistical methods and bioinformatics tools to guide breeding decisions and selection processes.
Stay updated on the latest advancements in vegetable crop breeding, genetics, and biotechnology.
Provide training and mentorship to junior breeders and research staff to enhance their skills and expertise.
Assist Chief Scientist for any kind of molecular /conventional research activities.
