Responsibilities & Context
Job Summary: The Junior Staff Nurse is responsible for delivering safe, effective, and patient-centered nursing care to individuals attending the hospital’s outpatient services. The role encompasses supporting physicians during consultations, performing initial clinical assessments, administering prescribed treatments, maintaining accurate patient documentation, and adhering to infection prevention and control protocols.
This position plays a vital role in managing patient flow and ensuring operational efficiency within a fast-paced outpatient environment. The Junior Staff Nurse is expected to uphold the highest standards of nursing professionalism, demonstrate strong teamwork, and communicate effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams. The nurse’s contribution is essential in ensuring that all patients receive timely, respectful, and quality care throughout their OPD experience.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Patient Reception & Flow Management

Receive and assist patients courteously upon arrival at the OPD chamber.

Verify patient identity, appointment details, and direct them to the appropriate consultation room.

Manage patient queue efficiently to ensure timely service and minimal waiting time.
2. Pre-Consultation Nursing Care
-
Record patient vital signs including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, and oxygen saturation.

Document patient complaints, medical history, and allergies as required.

Prepare patients for physical examination and diagnostic procedures.
3. Assistance During Consultation
-
Assist physicians during patient assessments and minor procedures.
-
Ensure availability and readiness of necessary instruments and supplies.

Maintain patient dignity, privacy, and comfort throughout the consultation.
4. Medication Administration & Clinical Procedures
-
Administer medications as prescribed by the physician (oral, injectable, or topical).
-
Observe and report any adverse reactions or side effects immediately.
-
Assist with procedures such as dressing changes, specimen collection, blood glucose checks, and nebulization.
5. Documentation & Record Management
-
Maintain accurate and updated nursing records, including patient assessments and treatment logs.

Ensure proper filing of patient documents and follow-up instructions.

Support in managing chamber records and coordination with electronic or paper-based health systems.
6. Infection Control & Hygiene
-
Follow all hospital infection control guidelines, including proper hand hygiene and use of PPE.

Disinfect equipment and clean surfaces between patients.

Monitor cleanliness and coordinate with housekeeping staff to maintain a hygienic OPD environment.
7. Emergency Response & Reporting

Respond promptly to any patient emergency within the OPD chamber.

Provide immediate nursing support and alert the physician or emergency team as required.

Report incidents, patient complaints, or unusual observations to the Nurse In-Charge or relevant authority.
8. Communication & Coordination

Clearly communicate physician instructions to patients and their families.

Coordinate with laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, and billing departments to support smooth patient care.

Collaborate with colleagues to ensure continuity of care and efficient workflow.
9. Training & Professional Conduct

Attend mandatory training sessions, departmental briefings, and workshops as directed.

Maintain patient confidentiality, ethical standards, and professional behavior at all times.

Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and adhere to hospital policies and procedures.
